about

An extravagant blend of hippie iconography, sexy comedy, and a commercialized interpretation of post-'68 counterculture, the 1969 film “L'uomo dal pennello d'oro” (known in English as Let It All Hang Out), an Italian-German co-production directed by Franz Marischka, defies easy categorization.

It should be preserved for posterity primarily for two reasons. Firstly, for the presence of a very young Edwige Fenech, aged just twenty, who appears on the screen in various states of undress, her body adorned with the vivid hues of body paint as she embodies the role of the beatnik muse to the protagonist painter. Secondly, and most importantly, for the beat-psychedelic soundtrack written by Gianfranco Reverberi and performed by The Underground Set, a band usually active in the Italian recording industry with the name Nuova Idea, but here re-named for contractual reasons.

In 1970, most of the music from the film found its way into The Underground Set’s debut album. Now, over fifty years later, Four Flies - in collaboration with the composer himself - has managed to unearth three previously unreleased, never-heard-before tracks from the original master tapes of the soundtrack.

The first two tracks are seamlessly in line with the eleven pieces already included in the band’s 1970 album, featuring an acid and robust type of rock that anticipates the prog rock of the ‘70s, a style embraced by the members of Nuova Idea. The third track, on the other hand, is a gentle and ethereal aria built on the rich and caressing sounds of a flute and a viola.

Shedding light on previously hidden gems, this small EP makes a valuable addition to Reverberi and The Underground Set's discography.
