Black Secret 02:41

about

In 1971, Gianfranco Reverberi composed the music for this sleazy sexy-horror flick by cult director Renato Polselli, a ‘maudit’ figure known for his bold, psychedelic but also chaotic works where the plot serves merely as a canvas for visual spectacles that often verge on soft-core territory.

The film, known in English as “Black Magic Rites,” makes use of horrific and disturbing elements by placing them within an esoteric setting of vivid colors and gothic architecture (shooting took place almost entirely at the Castle of Balsorano in the province of L'Aquila, a favored location for Italian horror films of the 1960s), resulting in ultra-kitsch effects, whether intentionally or not.

Becoming engrossed in the storyline and characters may prove very challenging, but that is not so with the captivating music by Reverberi. The Maestro is accompanied here by his band South African Combo, and it was under this moniker that two compositions from the soundtrack were released by record label Tickle on a now very rare 7 inch: the Afro-psychedelic “Orgiastic Ritual” and the romantic theme “Black Secret”.

The rest of the soundtrack, rediscovered by Cinedelic in 2016 after 45 years of obscurity, and now digitally available again through Four Flies, encompasses the full spectrum of sounds typical of 1970s horror. From electronic experiments to baroque influences, abstract textures, slowed-down magnetic tapes played in reverse, moans, screams, suspense and sinister effects, it presents a truly surprising score, unrestrained and brimming with creative madness.
